Photo Friday!

Since I missed this past Wednesday’s What I’m Reading, I am going to add that to the end of this week’s Photo Friday! post. I’ll be back on track next week; sorry!

So, I am getting better at remembering to take pictures; however, I am bad at remembering to take my camera with me everywhere, so I had to take all photos with my phone this week. Therefore, you’ll have to bear with my unedited, poor quality pictures this week.

First up, a blurry picture from trivia on Tuesday night. If you live in SF and want to join our team, we are scouting for members, especially those that know sports and pop culture/movie/music trivia. :)

I was going to take more than one picture of that night, but got caught up in the game and drinking (duh!) and forgot!

So, the next few pics are all from last night, at the Underground Market at Public Works. (Should I really be sharing this in a public space?!)

First thing I ate all night: Biscuit Bender’s with their cheddar gravy. YUM!

The picture really does not do it justice. These were mighty biscuits! They also have sweet options and American Eatery (part of Prather Ranch Meat Co.) in the Ferry Building uses their biscuits for breakfast items on their menu.

Next, a photo of the band Izzy Wise, who rocked out last night. The girl was playing the clarinet and the guy, Izzy, was playing a few different (and strange) instruments.

 

Next up, the truffles I bought from Casa De Chocolates in Berkeley. They are dark chocolate with cocoa powder. Sweet and delicious, but a bit messy from the cocoa powder.

The view from above…they are making mac n’ cheese from Homeroom and cheese plates from Mission Cheese. Mmm….cheese!

The next photo is my view of the crowd last night from my spot upstairs. It was totally packed! Lines for food were bending around corners and up stairs! Crazy!

SF Chefs 2010

Thanks to Foodbuzz for letting me into SF Chefs 2010 and setting up an interview with Chef Kory Stewart of Americano restaurant.
I was able to walk around the SF Chefs tent before going to the demo and the interview and it was really awesome to see and taste the food and wine offered in the bay area.

The cooking demo with Chef Kory was great-it was about mozzarella and ricotta cheese. We tried the fresh mozzarella, served with bread and tomato; it was delicious. He also made fried squash blossoms that were stuffed with the ricotta and some Parmesan cheese. I had not tried squash blossom before (though I’ve seen them at the farmer’s market) and they were good, too.

It was my first interview that I had with a chef (in which I was the interviewer and not the interviewee) I wasn’t sure what to ask, but I think I did alright (I got some inspiration from Bon Appetit magazine)… Continue reading

June Daring Bakers’ Challenge

The June 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Dawn of Doable and Delicious. Dawn challenged the Daring Bakers’ to make Chocolate Pavlovas and Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse. The challenge recipe is based on a recipe from the book Chocolate Epiphany by Francois Payard.

This was one delicious, chocolate-y challenge. I think the hardest part was not eating all of it in one sitting.

This is a three-part dessert, but all parts are really simple to make. It’s chocolate meringues, chocolate mascarpone mousse, and mascarpone cream anglaise sauce.

I did not find mascarpone cheese in either Lucky or Safeway, so I bought cream cheese, sour cream, and (extra) heavy cream to “make” my own mascarpone cheese, as I did not feel like making mascarpone cheese the way we did a few months back.

Anyway, I think because of my impatience (not letting the cream cheese soften), there were some parts of the mousse that had pockets of cheese, but it still tasted good and made me just as fat.

I had some cream anglaise sauce and mousse left over because I did not make many meringues, so I did a little experimenting, and mixed the two together and froze them in my springform pan. My plan was to have a no-crust cheesecake, but what I ended up with was an un-mold-able cross between chocolate ice cream and frozen chocolate mascarpone mousse. I think some people might call this a semi-freddo, but I am not sure that is the proper name for it. Anyway, it is a mighty, tasty concoction.

DB Challenge: Tiramisu

I liked this challenge for many reasons. I haven’t made tiramisu all from scratch before (as far as I know, most of the other Daring Bakers liked this challenge for the same reason.) It was quite a challenge, especially with all of the components.

I have made lady fingers and pastry cream before, but I haven’t made them since school, so that was a good way to practice. Also, I have never made cheese before, so that was a fun experience to see the whipped cream thicken up to a smooth marscopne cheese in only 24 hours. I was worried (like the challenger) that I had not cooked the cream enough, but sure enough, once cooled, you could definitely tell it was going to be okay.

Overall, I think this challenge was easy because all of the ingredients were easily accessed and the components necessary were easy to make, but to make a plan and know what components have to be made in advance was a challenge that I never really thought that way while making a dessert before.

The February 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen and Deeba of Passionate About Baking. They chose Tiramisu as the challenge for the month. Their challenge recipe is based on recipes from The Washington Post, Cordon Bleu at Home and Baking Obsession.
