What I’m Reading Wednesday

I know that it has been, like, FOREVER since I wrote one of these posts, so I will try my best to catch-up on all that I’ve been reading lately.

First up (and if you see when this was written, you will see just how long it really has been) a note about remembering to indulge a bit every once in awhile. Just make it a good one.

An article about what makes a (food) trend a trend. Also, Americans (& Canadians) make some sake.

There are many ways of photo-sharing on the Internet these days, but what about the photos of you that you’ll never see?

And, because it’s Halloween, and I figure I should have something topical on here: a candy hierarchy. And, candy for an adult palate, because, you know, you can’t have bourbon in caramels for the kids.

What I’m Reading Wednesday

This week I do not have much to share because I have been reading articles about things for school research and not reading so many “for fun” things.

But here’s what I have read in my spare time that I enjoyed:

For starters, I think it is important to know where the letters come from.

I mean, how are you supposed to read anything before knowing that? :)

P.S. Did you know that Count from Sesame Street died recently? Ah, AH, ah. (That would be so much better if read out loud in your best Count voice, trust me.)

Now that we’ve moved on past the basics of letters and numbers, let’s get real.

I am sure you have all heard of “pop-up” restaurants like my favorite Rice Paper Scissors. And, you may have read my posts that mention the Underground Market, but have you heard of a pop-up restaurant that is literally underground?

Now that we are all on the same page about these restaurants, what they know about you.

That’s all the reading I’ve been able to do lately. I hope that’s enough to tide you over ’til next week! If not, I am working on editing my photos, and there will definitely be a post on Friday, and hopefully some more over the next few days.

What I Am Reading Wednesday

Okay, so I’ve been away for a week. BUT, I do have a lot to share with what I’ve been reading and what I hope to share in the next few weeks!

So, what I’ve been reading:

I think this is great and that supermarkets should be allowed to do this in the U.S., too. I don’t know why farmers would want to hide what they are doing, if they are doing nothing wrong. :)

Speaking of doing nothing wrong, these Americans have been helping out their community.

And, if you are as much of a fan of This American Life & Ira Glass as I am, you would enjoy reading this.

I felt like this article was written just for me; it was just the advice I was looking for. And on a related note: this advice.

Since this is a food blog, I guess, really, I should be posting about food articles I’ve enjoyed recently. Like this one, about what the world eats.

Or, how about this one? For all of you pie-lovers out there. By the way, just a little survey: cake or pie? (Answer in the comments!)

For a more savory treat, (though you could make pie crust with lard) an article about lard making a comeback.

And, since it was recently what would have been Julia Child‘s 100th birthday, let’s all learn to eat the way that she did!

Lastly, great tips on getting your mojo back in the kitchen.

So, that’s what I’ve been reading. As I’ve said before, I have been working on some recipes I’d like to share soon, including some good ol’ American corn. I’ve also been making some things with coffee, and have another foodie pen pal box to pick up from the post office! Of course, I have some test photos I took with my new camera that I’ll share on Friday! Lots of posts coming soon(ish)!

What I’m Reading Wednesday

  1. San Francisco is known worldwide for its cable cars. Here’s an article I found interesting that depicts great moments in cable cars. Including this one, which happened two days before my birthday.
  2. On The Rumpus, a writer discusses where he likes to read (and write). I can relate as I sometimes go into coffee bars here (and drink tea, not coffee) and notice the other regulars or “semi-regulars”, as I like to call myself.
  3. As you may know, I love ice cream, and have just gotten into making my own, so I enjoyed reading this article about Cloud 10’s flavors.
  4. I joined the boyfriend’s book club for this time around since I found out they are reading A Wrinkle In Time. I had forgotten how strange, yet fun that book actually is.

  1. Another book I am reading right now is The Confessions of Max Tivoli. It is about this guy that grows up backwards. (like the movie The Confessions of Benjamin Button) What really makes it interesting for me is that it takes place in San Francisco in the late 1800s-early 1900s. It is a fun way to learn about the history of this city.

What I’m Reading Wednesday

I read a lot of Wikipedia pages in the past week. I know, that’s not something you need to read about. I just like how you can get lost on there for a while linking from one page to another. It’s almost the way my brain works sometimes, jumping from topic to topic. Anyway, on a more interesting note, I learned about a new fruit called a Plapple. It’s a plum-apple. It looks like and has a skin like an apple, but on the inside, it’s all plum-like: reddish-purple and juicy. Sort of sweet-tart tasting. They were brought into work by the produce guy. So random.

Another highlight of my week was learning how to make coffee without a coffee maker. And I learned that having proper coffee filters are truly useful. What I did was steep coffee (about 2 Tbsp.) in about 1-1/3 cup (because that’s what my recipe called for) hot water (I used water from my tea kettle) for about three minutes, and then stirred, and then steeped about three minutes more and then STRAINED. Since I did not have any coffee filters on hand, I used a mini strainer and strained about 5 or 6 times until I saw no more coffee grinds left. A lot of effort, but it works. Next time, definitely buying coffee filters.

As far as reading goes, I actually have not done much of it this past week since it’s been nice out and have spent time doing other things. Some other highlights from this week include:

  1. Hearing the symphony live for free. It was playing in Dolores park in celebration of 100 years.
  2. Watching Brave and Moonlight Kingdom back-to-back. (both good)
  3. Contra dancing. It’s like a cross between swing and square dancing done in a line. Fun but tiring and dizzying the first time.
  4. Meeting my boyfriend’s parents and sister and brother-in-law for the first time.

It has been a fun week. I will try to post more about the above mentioned items. I will definitely be posting pictures of them in my Photo Friday! post this week, so look out for that! Hope your week is going well so far!
